Bring On The Leonids

It seems as of late this week everyone’s eyes are looking skyward. This is evidenced by the number of calls that I have received wondering about meteor showers. Right now there are no meteor showers that are occurring in Eastern Iowa, but that will soon change.

The Leonid meteor showers occur this year from November 14-21. November 17 provides the peak view during the morning hours when 20 to 30 meteors can be observed. I will have more about where to look in the blog next week.

If you want some heavenly targets for viewing this weekend try finding some of the planets in our solar system. Currently our evening planets in the southwestern sky includes: Jupiter and Neptune with Uranus in the southern sky. At midnight Uranus will be in the western sky with Mars in the east. Early risers can find Mars in the southern sky, Saturn in the southeast and in the eastern sky Venus will be visible.

I hope you enjoy these beyond the weather views.
